Phoenix FD product review by Allan McKay

Chaos Group is happy to show the latest product review of Phoenix Fluid Dynamics done by Allan McKay and published in the November’s issue of the 3D World magazine. Allan McKay is a VFX supervisor who has worked on some of the biggest VFX films, for studios such as Industrial Light & Magic, Blur Studio, Prime Focus/Frantic Films and Digital Dimension.

The review highlights the best features of Phoenix FD and examines the advantages of this powerful new fluids simulator for creating realistic fire, smoke and explosions. He thinks that it has very fast simulation times and some features that make it favorable over FumeFX, such as faster viewport display, GPU-based previewing, adaptive containers and interactive sims.

Overview by Torgeir Holm

A Phoenix Fluid Dynamics product overview is made by Torgeir Holm, Creative Director 3D and VFX + Partner/Owner at Netron 2.0 AS and Editor at VRay.info. He explains some of the features in the product package scheduled for official release on August 9, 2010 at vray.info>>

Fluids are substances that continually deform, such as liquids, gases, plasma etc. Phoenix FD lets you simulate these fluids in 3ds Max. The simulation is stored in a finely subdivided 3D box, or grid, where each cell contains the fluid's properties at that location. These properties include temperature, mass and velocity. During the simulation Phoenix will transfer cell contents from cell to cell according to velocity over time, and also change the properties in the cells according to physical rules. The resulting simulation is then used for rendering.
