Discover the future of urban living in our "Architects of Change" report, uncovering key insights for sustainable cities.

Based on a survey conducted by Censuswide in January 2024, Chaos' "Architects of Change" report sheds light on urban challenges and offers a roadmap for better cities.

By leveraging the findings, architects and planners have a unique opportunity to shape sustainable and livable cities for the future, addressing the complex realities of urban living.

The participants: City dwellers across 4 countries

Chaos surveyed 4,024 people from across Germany, Italy, the UK, and the US over the age of 16, from single occupants to households with six and more occupants, and from a range of gross incomes (from $19,500 or less up to $97,500 or more).

The topic: Daily challenges of urban living

The survey delves into topics that impact city dwellers' daily lives, highlighting the challenges posed by the rapidly changing urban landscape. These include issues such as air quality, traffic congestion, overcrowding, transportation accessibility, noise pollution, and the effects of climate change on mental well-being and housing decisions. Financial pressures, especially housing affordability and energy costs, further compound the challenges faced by city residents.

The highlights

You can download the report here to read the complete findings. Below are some key insights.

  • 42% cited traffic congestion, and more than one in four cited overcrowding and overdevelopment as a challenge
  • 57% feel temperature extremes adversely affect their mental well-being.
  • Affordability of housing sees more than six in 10 (63%) city dwellers experience a fall in quality of life.
  • One in four (25%) believe challenges to their city home adversely impact their mental well-being.

By understanding the realities of cities today, we can better envision the cities of tomorrow!
