Some doodle with Particle Flow Box #2 and VRay. Took me an evening to do on the notebook while the workstation was simulating fumefx

    http://www.3delicious.de/flash/galle...cious_melt.jpg

A Deflated or molten IPad. Since I'm the opinion you get something nice that runs 3DS Max for the price of an IPad 3G

Some postwork in PhotoShop but very minor (Gradient Overlay, Contrast, Blur here and there, Chromatic Abberation, Vignette)

    Hope you like it.

Hy Eric, the melt tool is the Particle Flow Toolbox #2 from Orbaz: http://orbaz.com/products/particleflow/box2
It is pretty much the PhysX game engine implemented into PFlow. It is very easy to "glue" particles together and break gluing based on stress, torque or forces like wind. Here is an example: http://vimeo.com/7086699 or http://vimeo.com/7820729 where this animated GIF pretty much is exactly what i did: http://orbaz.com/documentation/parti...e_Type_01A.gif
The Ripping supports vray 3d motion blur btw although it is changing topology!

            kind regards,
            Anselm

Those vids look awesome! The toolbox and your vids look like likely buys for me, but I'm really curious how well this stuff will work in hi-res for print. I am typically rendering very high detail at 4K-6K, or even higher (right now the job I'm doing is 10K by 12K - fun ). These effects look fantastic, but so many things just don't work as well for hi-res stills as they for for animation. Any experience/references with those sorts of resolutions?

              Thanks /b

p.s I asked a quick question on your Pflow tutorial thread - any chance you've had a chance to look there?

                Dear Brett,
i will jump to the pflow tutorial thread right after this posting!

The statue head ripping was rendered in 2K at least for promotional prints last Siggraph. The only tricky part is that you need the Box#3 as well if you want to unfold the Box#2's full potential. What i usually do is i simulate and cache the particles/ripping and then add modifiers like Relax, Shell, Noise, VRay Displacement even, on top of the Particle Skinner modifier which is responsible for the tearing. So i especially for print work i choose the frames i like the motion etc best and make a snapshot, then i finess the look out further with modifiers ontop of the particle skinning. Worked pretty good for me so far! The only thing it doesnt do super well is objects made of alot of sub-objects. In that case i would run a sim with a low poly version of it and skin the high res vrsion to it.

                kind regards,
                Anselm

I guess I'll have to just give it a try and see how I do I'm just hesitant to spend another whack of money and huge amount of time trying to find out - it's kinda never ending. Thanks, I appreciate the answer. The effects are very cool in any case!

Maybe you should shoot Oleg over at Orbaz a mail for a demo version. I don't believe the demo version is the latest build of em all but it should give you an idea

Thanks Anselm - I may give that approach a try. Just bought Krakatoa though, so I'm knee deep in trying to figure that out too. Definitely want to look into how you did this though.... Never enough time!

That is a cool effect! Wish I had more time (and money ) to play with that toolbox. Looks great!

                            Thank you Brett!
I might write up a quick tutorial for such an effect. It is very easy tho, easier then using cloth or a fluid simulator imo

                            cheers,

My buddy John Rand has a tutorial on his website about box#2 soft bodies

                              http://4rand.com/learn-stuff/box2-so...-deformations/

maybe that will get you started.
