You have to restart Max in order the changes to take effect btw.

I want to believe, but the horror of past experiences still resonates.

              • He he...the amount of skeptisim here is amusing and certainly I don't blame anyone a bit - I'm skeptical as well. But hey, it's only software and if nVidea can do it, then certainly AMD can. I really hope they have broken through this time 'cause like I said, monopolies on this sort of thing are never good for the end users...And I have to say that speaking to them at Siggraph (two years in a row!), they certainly sounded interested...

                • I upgraded to the latest SDK and driver beta. On Max 2013 Design, Win 7 x64, and VRay 3.0 trying on my 7950's (both or a single) the cmd window reports a big string of errors before crashing the V-Ray service. Maybe the universe just hates me alone?

Slizer: which VRay RT were you using? 3 or 2.4?

We used 2.4; we do get the same problems with 3.0 and we are looking into fixing them.

                    • Ah, well, one step closer at least. Could you guys at CG keep me updated to the status of this issue?

                          • Well, I just tested a FirePro W8000 with the 14th driver release, rendered in 2m 39s, which puts it on par with a GTX 580. Not bad, not bad at all. So I believe it now

Not bad indeed! They are apparently well on their way. Now we just need to see the word get out prices start to come down...

Thanks, that answers a lot of my questions. I was planning to build 3 workstations, and was inclined to use 2x W8000 on each. This certainly clears a lot of doubt in my minds. The latest benchmarks on W8000 seem very impressive, and the price is also not too out of reach.

The current W8000 is based on the Tahiti, I was hoping the Hawaii based pro cards would come soon. Can't imagine what a 290X based FirePro can do, if the W8000 is performing like this.
