      More intelligent sampling strategy ?
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

                  Perfect

                  Rendersettings
Render settings are as simple as you can get: dmc image sampler 1/4; brute force GI with 4 subdivs and 3 bounces.

                  More intelligent sampling strategy
Yes... a bit cleverer sampling of transparent hairs.

                  VRayHairMtl4
                  Nope; it's still hairmtl3

                  i know, u have a new cpu
Nope, both are rendered on my laptop

Anyways, it should be in the nightly builds already, you can play with that...

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

No, Embree does not support hair.

                        Vlado,

I'm getting jealous looking over my neighbour's fence at some of the vray for maya features - I'd imagine the first thing you need to do is get the translation between each program and vray itself, and then gradually start supporting the features. Is the plan to eventually have one vray core and then start linking each ui to it so that there'll only be one vray as such with the same features rolling out to every program at the same time?

                        Cheers!

                        John (for 3dsmax)

The V-Ray core *is* the same; both implementations share a lot of code. For example, the changes that I made for the Maya hair shader are automatically included in the 3ds Max one.

This depends; changes to the V-Ray core itself go into all products at the same time (f.e. optimizations). However, sometimes implementing a new feature requires a lot of experimentation; it makes more sense to focus on one platform while developing the feature as the code and the UI are constantly changed. Once the code is more or less complete, we start looking into porting it for other applications.

                          Best regards,
                          Vlado

Ah, I understand. There's a few very useful bits on the maya side which makes sense since it's got such a heavy VFX user base. Must switch over at some point!

Does this improvement go into 2.40 (maya&3dsMax)? or 3.0?

                              Thanx
