  • Coldplay music video

Here's a promo I did whilst pitching for the latest Coldplay video. Eventually we lost out to the very talented Shynola, but decided to go ahead and complete our effort anyway, with blessing from Coldplay.

    100% rendered in Vray.

VERY nice, can you tell a bit about how the head animation was created?

        um, wow.
        just wow.
that's a beautiful piece of work. really love it.
Syhnola really are incredible animators and always have been; I have real respect for them as I'm sure you do; I wouldn't feel bad knowing I lost out to the best!

Love the style, love the setting, underground looks great; textures and colours are excellent.
Would love to know a bit more about your workflow / processes such as the DOF and what comping you did...

        Good work!

I have to say when we heard Shynola were pitching too my heart sank a little, I've always been a big fan of their work and new they would be tough opponents. As expected they got the contract, and we made the tough decision to try and finish ours, with an understanding that Coldplay would be prepared to show it on their site as an unofficial promo. Thats still great coverage.

I worked on it on and off for 4-5 months, I can't give a real indication of how long it took as there were long periods in that time when tools were downed.

The head animation used different set ups for different shots. I'm all for doing just what needs to be done to work 'in shot'. So when the heads start to elongate they are simply morphing, when they knit together in the carriage they use a rig of path constrained bones, and when they knit together in the sky they are using path deforms.

DOF is a mixture of vray and a post effect in After Effects, depending on which shot.

                    Great work!

I actually like it, in spite of the fact that it's unusual, especially for a band like Coldplay. It has a tactile texturing work that helps a lot with the we. At the beginning i thought it might be stop motion!

I really like the way you dared to pitch a risky plot/style combo and, even if they rejected it, still go for it and finish it. I know how hard is gathering that huge amount of commitment, but, when u believe in it, you just need to push it.

                    Congrats!

                      Really nice work Matt!

I was mostly marvelling at the technical side of things like the lighting, rendering...etc. until (bizarrely) their heads started to elongate, then I just started enjoying watching it

Personally I felt the thumbprints were a little ott in places, but it's possible this was because once I'd noticed you'd done it, I was looking for it.

Hope this generates more work/interest for you guys.

Cool video, the face stretching is a bit freaky

Weird, but well done. Not a big fan of coldplay, but I'd like to know where the idea came from. Its such a stong concept: was it something from the song that gave the initial idea or something you just fancied doing?

Initially when the heads stretched, I thought they looked a bit like nobs, but then I tried to forget that and concentrate

Some shots made the texture look a bit like plasticine and others a bit like wood. I assume plastercine was the goal?

I loved the choice of shots. Really cinematic locked off shots. Well done.
                          Kind Regards,
                          Richard Birket

                            excellent execution.
From technical point of view everything is done top notch.

Outstanding work! I really enjoy it. Beautiful concept and well executed all over. The only thing that borhered me a bit was that couple didn't show any emotions while passionately twirling around but I guess that's part of the concept.
Good work guys.Congratulations to all involved.
